Updated: Déjà vu? Yerevan City Hall Again Denies HAK Rally Request

Yerevan City Hall today discussed the Armenian National Congress’ (HAK) request for a permit to hold a rally on Sept. 24 at Freedom (Liberty) Square in central Yerevan.

During the discussion, in which HAK member Tigran Arakelyan was present, a heated debate played out between members of the opposition group and city hall representatives, which turned out to be ineffective for HAK: Yerevan City Hall once again denied the group’s request, suggesting they use the area near the Matenadaran (Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts) instead.

During the meeting, Arakelyan said that arguing with city hall representatives was simply pointless, and the issue must be resolved in the courts.

As previously reported, HAK’s earlier appeal to hold a rally in Freedom Square on Sept. 17 was also denied.

[Editor’s note: paragarph on Arakelyan stating that arguing with city hall representatives was pointless was added later.]
