Azerbaijan Dissolves its Military Police

Large-scale reforms in Azerbaijan’s army began with the dissolution of the Military Police. This decision was made at the presidential level and is being implemented as part of the organization of Azerbaijan’s Armed Forces, in accordance with NATO standards.

“In fact, the Military Police is an unlawful military body, and sooner or later it had to be eliminated,” said Center for Military Research Director Ildirim Mamedov in an interview with Milaz.

According to him, under the supervision of the Ministry of Defense, the Military Police was one of the reasons for the numerous (negative) irregular phenomena in the army. In the near future, he said, a new structure will be created which will be stronger than not only the Ministry of Defense, but also other power structures.

Last week, upon a command by Azerbaijani Minister of Defense Colonel-General Safar Abiyev, large-scale inspections began into a military base in Baku belonging to the Military Police.

During the inspection, a significant number of soldiers weren’t present, as a result of which the minister ordered the unit commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Clos Abbasova to be held responsible. Note that the sons of high-ranking officials are serving in this particular military base.

Abiyev also ordered Military Police Chief Colonel Rovshan Maharramov, who was on holiday, to return to Baku.
