Surp Harutyun Church in Istanbul Renovated, Open for Service

Surp Harutyun Church (the Church of Holy Resurrection) in Istanbul’s central Beyoğlu district has re-opened for service Thursday after undergoing renovation, reports the Hurriyet Daily News & Economic Review.

Mustafa Sarıgül, mayor of Şişli, participated in the opening ceremony together with Archbishop Aram Ateshian, the Grand Sacristan of the Holy Mother of God Armenian Cathedral at the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople. Sarıgül said Şişli tries to provide clean praying conditions for their citizens living in Şişli.

“We renovated the inside of Surp Harutyun as some of the non-Muslim citizens who live in Şişli also come here for prayers,” said Sarıgül.

Note that Şişli is one of the most Armenian-populated districts in Istanbul. The renovation was undertaken by the Şişli Municipality and cost 175,000 Turkish lira (about $85,000).
