Police Deny Activists’ Requests to Approach CoE Forum Participants

At noon local time today, the Armenian National Congress (HAK) began its picket next to the Government Guest House, on 47 Mashtots Ave. in Yerevan, where the Council of Europe started its three-day Forum for the Future of Democracy today.

A large number of police vehicles and police officers have gathered in the area. HAK representative Vladimir Karapetyan appealed to the officers, asking them to allow HAK youth activists to approach forum participants and hand out packages with the list of political prisoners in Armenia according to HAK; a short film depicting the events of March 1, 2008; and a number of documents that outline human rights violations in Armenia.

The officers denied Karapetyan’s request.

At this time, protestors gathered near the Government Guest House, shouting out opposition slogans, are continuing their picket.
