Armenia’s Ombudsman Ready to Support Repatriation of Armenian, Azerbaijani Captives’ Bodies

Armenia’s Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) Armen Harutyunyan has issued a letter to his counterparts in Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan, calling on them to show mutual tolerance and take the necessary measures for the repatriation of the bodies of Armenian and Azerbaijan men who were taken captive earlier this year.

“I call on and urge Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh [NKR] Human Rights Defender Yuri Hayrapetyan to intervene with the NKR authorities in returning the bodies of Farid Ahmadov and Mubariz Ibrahimov.

“At the same time, I call on Azerbaijan’s Human Rights Defender [Commissioner] Elmira Suleymanova to be humane and ask the competent bodies to allow international experts to investigate the circumstances of RA [Republic of Armenia] citizen [Manvel Saribekyan] being taken captive and the causes of his death.

“I also call on [Azerbaijani authorities] to take measures in returning the corpse of Manvel Saribekyan to the Republic of Armenia.

“I, as the RA Human Rights Defender, am prepared, with my authority, to support the proper implementation of these processes,” reads Harutyunyan’s letter.
