Moscow’s Position in Karabakh Conflict Changed After Selling Weapons

Moscow’s position in the matter of resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has changed in principal after the meeting of the presidents of Azerbaijan and Russia in Sochi last January, said political analyst Mubariz Ahmedoglu in an interview with Novosti-Azerbaijan.

He attributes this to the sale of a type of weaponry called “Peony,” which “unlike the C300, is intended for attack.”

“This means that if war begins, Russia will support Azerbaijan,” said Ahmedoglu.

According to the Baku-based expert, the changes in Moscow’s position serve the interests of Azerbaijan.

“[Russian President Dmitry] Medvedev is resolute in the issue of resolving the Karabakh conflict: he intends to solve this problem,” said the analyst, expressing confidence that much can be expected from the upcoming meeting of the presidents of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan in Astana.

“If there are no results from this meeting, Medvedev, within the frames of the OSCE summit in Astana, will propose to Armenia’s and Azerbaijan’s presidents to meet again, and in this case, definitely a document to resolve the Karabakh conflict will be signed,” concluded the analyst.
