Armenia Participated in Eurasian Economic Community as Observer

The delegation from Armenia led by RA Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan continues its working visit to St. Petersburg, where following the regular meeting of the Council of heads of CIS member states, the 28th session of Eurasian Economic Community’s (EurAsEC) Interstate Council was held.

After a private meeting of the heads of state, a broader meeting with all the delegations took place. Out of around two dozen issues on the meeting agenda, the issue of promoting the work of an innovative center was given importance, which, by the way, is of particular interest to the Republic of Armenia. It was noted that the center would broaden its activities in the future; in particular, existing business plans will be brought to the attention of the Eurasian Development Bank and national venture funds, reads an official Government of Armenia press release.

According to Itar-Tass news agency, the meeting’s agenda included 22 draft documents geared towards closer cooperation among the CIS countries in the areas of economics, security, and the humanities.

Among such documents was a draft agreement on a free trade zone that is to supersede more than 100 current agreements and to remove a number of barriers in mutual trade. The agreement is expected to be ready for signing by CIS heads of government in the first six months of the next year

The Eurasian Economic Community incorporates Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Note that, along with Ukraine and Moldova, the Republic of Armenia has the status of observer in the Eurasian Economic Community.
