Protesting Greek Journalists Halt News Coverage

Greek journalist unions are on a 24-hour strike that has put a halt to news programs, website updates and newspaper publication. The strike began at 6 am this morning and will end tomorrow at 6 am local time.

Unions are demanding better working conditions and protesting private sector labour reforms in the country as it deals with its economic crisis.

Tuesday’s strike at both private and state-run media follows last week’s closure of the respected To Vima newspaper’s daily print edition and takes place amid fears of layoffs in Greece’s troubled media sector, reports CTV.ca.

As a result, daily newspapers will not be published Wednesday.

Greek unions are angry at government plans to relax the application of collective wage agreements, the latest in a series of

unpopular labour reforms implemented as part of the country’s international bailout loan agreement.
