Armenian Government Designates Specially Protected Status to Karahunj

The Government of Armenia approved a decision today in which the historic reserves of Zorats Karer (better known as Karahunj, Qarahunge or Carahunge) is defined within an area of 50 hectares, the settlement has been moved to the category of specially protected lands, and the Service of Preservation of Historical-Cultural Reserve-Museums and Historical Environment has been granted unlimited, free of charge right of use to the area.

Note that Karahunj (or Zorats Karer) is a prehistoric monument consisting of hundreds of standing stones on a territorial area of approximately 7 hectares. Its age has been estimated to be 7,500 years or older (VI millennium BC) and many have compared it to its younger counterpart, Stonehenge in the UK.
