Depardieu Not Prohibited from Performing in Baku after Visiting Karabakh

On Dec. 13, before a performance of “Carmen” at Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, French actor Gérard Depardieu will read selected excerpts from a novel by Prosper Mérimée, reports Novosti Azerbaijan.

Recall that in Sept. of this year, according to media reports, the French actor had visited Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh during the “Karot” festival.

After it became known that many entertainers from Russia, not to mention Italian singer Al Bano, visited Nagorno-Karabakh, the Heydar Aliyev Palace administration in Baku issued a statement in which it stated that all artists who have ever performed in the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh are prohibited from engaging in creative activities (including performing) in Azerbaijan.

The statement also mentioned that all of Azerbaijan’s ministries and agencies, particularly the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, will be monitoring and suppressing performances of those musicians and entertainers who have visited Karabakh.
