Armenian MP Hopes, New Mayor Won’t Join Republican Party Ranks

Karen Karapetyan is coming from a system where there are coordinated, regulated relations and not family or friend connections, said Heritage Party MP Larisa Alaverdyan, speaking to journalists during the break at today’s meeting of Yerevan Council of Alderman and commenting on the only candidate for Yerevan’s new mayor, Karen Karapetyan.

Alaverdyan noted that this attribute gives reason to hope that Karapetyan will bring changes to relations between the mayor’s office and Yerevan residents.

“I hope that the negative public relations that existed before will come to an end. I hope that he will be able to make the work of the mayor more transparent,” she said.

Asked whether it’s possible that Karen Karapetyan, not currently a member of any political party, will join the ranks of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, the National Assembly deputy said, “I would welcome it if the party did not take the step of turning him into a party member.”

In Alaverdyan’s opinion, not being a member of any party will assist Karapetyan’s work in his new position.

Asked by a journalist to comment on Karapetyan’s candidacy, the MP said: “I cannot provide an assessment of him as mayor, and, anyway, I am a Doubting Thomas [a skeptic] — until I don’t see it, I won’t believe it.”
