Armenian Women Asking for Political Prisoners’ Release Gathered in Front of Prosecutor’s Office Today

The opposition group Armenian National Congress (HAK) held its first rally of the year today in front of the RA General Prosecutor’s office.

The wives of political prisoners today sent their 136th letter to the general prosecutor, asking for the release of their husbands.

Participating in the demonstration were members of the opposition bloc, former political prisoners and HAK activists. Garunik Soghomonyan, wife of political prisoner Aram Bareghamyan, speaking to Epress.am, said if they didn’t have hope that their efforts would yield results, they wouldn’t have kept up the fight for so long.

“If we’ve begun, then we must make it to the end. The struggle will reach its aim and will never stand back; random people, of course, will stand back. A true fighter never gives up,” she said.

According to Melissa Brown, wife of former political prisoner Alexander Arzumanyan, their efforts have already been fruitful: the number of political prisoners in Armenia dropped from 50 to 9.

“Nine is still too much, that’s why we have to fight, so all are released. The result is tied to the will of the people. The core of the movement cannot be broken,” she said.
