‘Ugly’ Monument Cannot Bring Armenia, Turkey Peoples Closer: Turkologist

Turkologist Hakob Chakryan, speaking to journalists in Yerevan today, called the Monument of Humanity “disgracefully ugly.” A journalist had asked him about the monument in Kars which is said to symbolize friendship between Turkey and Armenia, to which Chakryan responded that such a monument could not bring the peoples of Armenia and Turkey closer.

According to the Turkologist, the two nations will be closer only when Turkey recognizes the Armenian Genocide.

Chakryan recalled that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan wanted to dismantle the monument, which is a political and not a cultural problem, he said.

“Erdogan spewed one thing out of his mouth, saying, this monument is taller than the minarets of the mosques in the area,” said Chakryan, adding the monument was built near an Armenian district’s cemetery and this fact can subsequently become a  subject of speculation. “Since there will be elections in Turkey in a few months, Edrogan doesn’t want to disappoint voters.”
