Drivers Protest in Gyumri’s Main Square: Police Say, Go Home

The number of protestors gathered at Gyumri’s main square is increasing. As told to Epress.am by demonstrator Karen Poghosyan, police approached the protesting drivers and asked 4–5 of them to come to the regional police division in order to call Yerevan and try to talk to the relevant bodies.

“Four people went with them to the regional police division, they say, let’s go and call the prime minister, or another relevant official, in order to voice their demands. The demands are as follows: to leave the law unchanged and make the customs tariff the same as it is in Georgia,” he said, adding there are many police officers in Gyumri’s main square, and they are actively urging demonstrators to go home.

Recall, prior to gathering at Gyumri’s square, drivers had blocked the Yerevan-Gyumri route, which resulted in serious traffic jams today. According to drivers, who are protesting the increased customs duties on cars imported from Georgia to Armenia, they will protest until their demands are met.
