Armenia’s Foreign Ministry Rejects Blind Youth’s Appeal

Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs invited 3 supporters of 23-year-old Artak Beglaryan to provide an explanation and a response to Beglaryan’s appeal letter. Recall, Beglaryan had applied to study at the foreign ministry’s diplomatic school; however, his application was denied because he is blind.

Beglaryan had issued an open letter (published on Facebook) to the RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs, citing all those laws in Armenia that don’t prohibit blind individuals to receive education in institutions of higher learning.

Beglaryan himself went to the ministry in order to receive an explanation for the dismissal. Ministry officials informed him that their decision stands, clarifying their position through law and explaining that they inquired on the medical front, as a result of which it became known that the illnesses noted in this section of the law lead to blindness, which disqualifies him as a student.

The young man, regardless, tried to once again explain his position; however, to no avail.

Artak Beglaryan is now preparing to take the issue to court.
