HAK Activist Vardges Gaspari Released from Police Custody

Released from Yerevan Police Kentron (central) division about an hour ago was Armenian National Congress (HAK) activist Vardges Gaspari, who was forcibly picked up by police outside the government building during a protest on the ban on street trade.

As reported earlier, Gaspari, speaking to an Epress.am journalist from the other side of the glass, said police shoved him at Republic Square then picked him and brought him to the police station — without stating the reason for detaining him.

Note, Heritage Party MP Larisa Alaverdyan had come to the central police station and asked to speak to central division deputy police chief Grisha Amirkhanyan. She was allowed to see him; however, the Epress.am journalist with her was not.

As reported previously, after leaving the building, Alaverdyan said Amirkhanyan told her Gaspari has not been subject to violence in police custody. The MP noted that she doesn’t see a basis for keeping Gaspari in police custody and hoped that they would release him soon. Amirkhanyan said they’ll “review the case” and make a decision soon.
