Police Say Arrested HAK Activist Didn’t Deny Hitting

RA Police issued a statement today regarding the arrest of Armenian National Congress (HAK) supporter, well-known boxer and double European champion Samson Khachatryan.

The police statement notes that at the intersection of Mashtots and Koryun streets in Yerevan at around 6 pm on Mar. 1, Khachatryan did not obey the lawful demands by police officers, displayed resistance and hit one of the officers, causing him bodily harm.

According to the police, Khachatryan announced at the station that during the kerfuffle, it’s possible he might’ve hit, but he can’t say who was at the receiving end of the blow.

As reported by Epress.am earlier, Khachatryan was picked up outside the Dynamo sports club on Sunday and taken to Yerevan’s central police division. It later became known that his friends, Misak Hovakimyan and Poghos Trmzyan, were also being held by police.

Later, Khachatryan’s attorney Ara Zakaryan informed Epress.am that his client was assigned a pre-trial detention of 72 hours. He is being charged under RA Criminal Code Article 316 Section 1 (violence against a representative of the authorities), connected to the Mar. 1 incident.
