Court Ruling to Unfreeze Newspaper’s Assets Doesn’t Make Editor Happy

The Court of General Jurisdiction of Kentron and Nork-Marash Administrative Districts of Yerevan yesterday ruled to “unfreeze” the assets of local daily Hraparak, said Hraparak chief editor Armine Ohanyan, speaking to Epress.am today.

Recall, second president of the Republic of Armenia Robert Kocharian recently initiated a lawsuit against Hraparak, demanding 6 million drams (about $16,200 US) in compensation for insulting his honor and dignity. An article titled “They Destroy Kocharian, Explain to Tsarukyan?” became the grounds for the legal proceedings.

“We made a motion to the… court to remove the freeze on assets and that same court that ruled to freeze our assets, examining our motion, decided to sustain it. In no way does it encourage me that the authorities in so-called small ways are trying to show that they’re doing something for the press. This is simply a way to blunt vigilance. The most important thing is the final verdict, which, I’m convinced, won’t be in our favor,” she said.
