Armenian World Champion Weightlifter Nazik Avdalyan Hospitalized (updated)

2009 World Champion in Weightlifting (in the 69-kg section) Nazik Avdalyan, 24, was in a car accident today on the Gyumri-Vanadzor road near the village of Jajur in Armenia’s Shirak marz (province).

As told to Epress.am by Gyumri-based GALA TV, Avdalyan was immediately taken to Gyumri’s Surgical Hospital named after G. Gyulbenkyan, but will be moved to Yerevan.

According to preliminary data, Avdalyan has spinal injuries. There are no other details available at this time.

It is also unclear as to whether Avdalyan was the driver of the vehicle or not. Recall, after earning the World Champion title, Avdalyan was awarded a car by chair of Armenia’s National Olympic Committee Gagik Tsarukyan.

Update 3:30 pm: Avdalyan will be moved to Yerevan within the hour.

As told to Epress.am by Gyulbenkyan hospital reanimatologist Hovhannes Nahapetyan, as a result of the accident, Avdalyan has no fractures. She has a spinal cord concussion, and her condition is stable.

Nahapetyan further said that the athlete will be moved to Yerevan to be examined, so that she can recover more quickly and return to her professional activities. According to the doctor, Avdalyan is conscious and can speak.
