Parliamentary Chair Asks Armenian President to Pardon Sasun Mikaelyan

Chair of the National Assembly of Armenia Hovik Abrahamyan today appealed to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan to release imprisoned oppositionist Sasun Mikaelyan:

“Dear Mr. President, joining the proposal by the parliamentary coalition political forces and being concerned by our former colleague Sasun Mikaelyan’s health, I ask you to consider the possibility of pardoning him.”

This news was conveyed by the RA National Assembly public relations department.

Recall, Mikaelyan was arrested on Mar. 12, 2008, and charged with violating Articles 225 (mass disorder) and 235 (illegal weapons possession) during the mass unrest that followed a disputed presidential election in 2008. He was sentenced to eight years in prison, and, according to the website “Wives of Armenia’s Political Prisoners,” he is the only one of seven also arrested under similar charges not have been granted amnesty. It is widely known that Mikaelyan has a heart condition.
