Yerevan Street Vendors Say They’ve Been Given Permission to Trade on Church Grounds

Yerevan street traders who work along Tigran Metz Ave. across the street from Rossiya mall have been provided the area surrounding the St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral by the Kentron (“Center”) district office to sell their wares, one such vender told Epress.am today.

“They’ve promised us, that we can do trade here, till they build a market in an area a bit further away. If that’s the case, we’ll be very happy,” they said.

However, Yerevan City Hall employees who were on site told Epress.am that the Church doesn’t allow trade on its grounds and they were trying to manage the situation.

According to them, though there are differences, the municipality will apply relevant legal measures and the best decision for the street traders will be made.

Recall, for the last three months, the street traders working this particular strip have been actively fighting against a decision by the Yerevan mayor to ban street trade, which came into effect early this year.
