Aronian Loses Chance to be Next Challenger for World Chess Champion

Armenian GM Levon Aronian lost to Russia’s GM Alexander Grischuk in yesterday’s Tiebreaks at the 2011 FIDE Candidates Matches, thereby losing the chance to be the next challenger for Vishy Anand’s world title.

Recall, Aronian and Grischuk settled on a draw in all four games of the first round of quarterfinals of the tournament, which runs from May 3–27 in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan in Russia. In the Tiebreak played on May 9, Grischuk beat Aronian, 2.5–1.5.

Grischuk is now preparing to play against GM Vladimir Kramnik, who beat Azerbaijan’s GM Teimour Radjabov in the May 9 Tiebreak. The other pairing in Round 2 of the tournament is GM Boris Gelfand (Israel) vs. GM Gata Kamsky (US).
