Armenia Bypasses Azerbaijan in Chess Championship. Last Hurdle is Germany

Armenia signed a credible victory against the Netherlands (3-1) in Round 8 of the 18th European Team Chess Championship in Greece.

The games of Armenian players Sergei Movsesian and Gabriel Sargissian, playing black on the second and fourth boards respectively, ended in a draw, while Levon Aronian and Vladimir Akopian on white beat their opponents, 1-0 each.

Also in Round 8, Azerbaijan lost to Germany, 1.5–2.5, which resulted in both the Armenian and German teams bypassing Azerbaijan in the standings. Both teams now have 13 points, but Armenia is leading the standings because in combining teams’ individual players’ scores, Armenia has 21 points while Germany has 20.

Today, the last day of the tournament, Armenia and Germany are paired to play each other.
