The People v. Armenian Police Chief Vladimir Gasparyan: New Initiative by Local Group

An event page created on Facebook called “The People v. Vova Gasparyan” aims to keep attention focused on Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Office President Artur Sakunts’ lawsuit against Armenian Police Chief Vladimir Gasparyan, said member of the local movement “Army in Reality” Lala Aslikyan who created the page.

Note, Sakunts is asserting that the police chief, when he was RA Deputy Minister of Defense, defamed Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Office in several interviews he gave. Furthermore, the human rights activist is demanding that Gasparyan publicly apologize for insulting mothers of killed soldiers who were protesting outside the Government of Armenia building, publicly refute the defamatory remarks he made, and pay 10 AMD (approx. $0.03 USD) to the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Office in compensation.

“Of course, the 10 drams is a symbolic amount. It’s just important for us that a high-ranking official who works for the people and receives a salary from our taxes reckon with the people and not allow himself to make lewd statements — and that publicly, in interviews,” said Aslikyan, speaking to Epress.am.

The lawsuit will be examined tomorrow, on Jan. 24, at the Court of General Jurisdiction of Kentron and Nork-Marash Administrative Districts of Yerevan.
