Opposition Leader Levon Ter-Petrossian Discusses Upcoming Elections with European Official

On Jan. 28, first president of Armenia and leader of the opposition bloc the Armenian National Congress (HAK) Levon Ter-Petrossian met with the delegation headed by European Liberal Democrat and Reform party (ELDR) Vice-President Lousewies van der Laan.

As reported by the HAK press service, the parties discussed establishing democracy, fighting the “state-level machine falsifying elections,” and organizing free and fair elections, as well as the participation of the international community, particularly the ELDR, in these matters. Opportunities for improving and increasing the effectiveness of the activities of the OSCE/ODIHR and other international observer organizations were also touched upon.

The parties stressed that the international community will take a serious approach this time toward holding free and fair elections in Armenia, so that “elections that manipulate the will of the people will be ruled out.”

On Jan. 29, Levon Zurabyan, coordinator of HAK’s day-to-day affairs, and Lousewies van der Laan continued the discussion on these matters.
