Appeals Court Sustains Lower Court Ruling: Baghdasaryan Charged for Murder, Sentenced to 14 Years

The Appeals Court sustained a lower court ruling that found Vram Baghdasaryan guilty for the May 12, 2010 murder of 23-year-old Khachik Mkrtchyan and sentenced him to 14 years in prison. Recall, the appellant’s attorneys were Gayane Khachatryan and Nina Karapetyants, both members of the Helsinki Association for Human Rights.

Mikael Danielyan, president of the Helsinki Association for Human Rights, informed Epress.am that two days ago at the penultimate court session, Gayane Khachatryan made three motions, all of which were rejected.

“The first was to call to court [former head of the RA Police General Department of Criminal Intelligence] Hovhannes Tamamyan, who was sacked from his job and charged in connection with this case. After hearing this, prosecutor Koryun Piloyan objected, saying that Tamamyan’s case is being examined in a different court — ‘go there and raise this issue’. Second, [the attorney motioned] to call MP Levon Sargsyan to court, since the weapons used during the incident were kept at his place. A unique response came from Piloyan on this matter: ‘Levon Sargsyan wasn’t present at the scene and has no information’. Gayane Khachatryan then said not everyone who testified was at the scene of the crime,” he said.

The third motion made by the appellant’s representatives was for the court to present all those documents that became the basis for launching a criminal case against Vram Baghdasaryan. That is, a document by the National Security Service addressed to the General Prosecutor.

“Piloyan said, you know, all those documents are in the [case] materials. At that moment, Judge Gagik Avetisyan said, ‘There aren’t those documents.’ But then they agreed and said, you know, there are those documents and the motion was rejected,” the human rights campaigner summed up.
