Armenia to Apply for Second Round of Millennium Challenge Funding

The Armenian government last December applied for a second round of funding from the US government's Millennium Challenge Corporation, but was refused, reports Haykakan Zhamanak.

"Government representatives, however, carefully conceled this news. The government is preparing to apply again in the near future," the local daily reports.

To what extent is Armenia prepared to re-apply for the program? the newspaper asked RA prime minister spokesperson Harutyun Berberyan.
"When a window opens, Armenia always applies and expresses interest in such programs, and we hope that in the near future it will meet the [necessary] criteria and there will be an answer," he said.

Recall, US Ambassador to Armenia John A. Heffern in an interview with RFE/RL's Armenian service recently noted that Armenia has not met the critera in the "critical area" of anti-corruption, which it needs to satisfy in order to apply for a second round of funding.
