Armenian Sport Minister’s Son Arrested for Drug Trafficking: Paper

Last week, RA Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Yuri Vardanyan’s oldest son was arrested at the Iran-Armenia border, reports local daily Zhoghovurd, citing its own sources.

The paper reports that the minister’s son attempted to smuggle drugs at the border, hiding the illegal substances all over his body, but he was caught. Police detained the young man in Kapan, Armenia, while the investigation is underway in Yerevan.

Zhoghovurd was informed that Yuri Vardanyan is trying not to get involved in the incident, in order to avoid public scrutiny and criticism. The newspaper attempted to verify the news with the RA Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs press spokesperson, however, the spokesperson said he did not possess such information: “The minister was busy; he was in meetings; I was unable to verify anything.”

The police also did not provide any details.
