Armenian Opposition Activists Detained by Police for 2 Hours Then Released

A few Armenian National Congress activists were detained by police for putting up flyers, reports local news provider iLur.am [AM].

The opposition activists were posting flyers in Yerevan's Arabkir district to notify the public of an upcoming rally when police officers approached them and said posting flyers in that place is prohibited. The activists pointed to other posters stuck in the same place (including those of a political nature) and said, "If these are posted, then our flyers can also be posted." Police then detained the activists and took them to the Arabkir Police Division and after keeping them there for two hours, released them, without drawing up a formal report.

Armenian National Congress Deputy Chair, MP Levon Zurabyan, who came to the police station, told the iLur.am correspondent that this is just another example of arbitrary and selective treatment by the police, because if there were other posters up in that same place, why shouldn't their posters be up as well?

"This proves one thing, that the authorities are worried — this is a sign of fear," Zurabyan said.
