22-Year-Old Murder Suspect Resumes Hunger Strike in Prison

Vanadzor native, murder suspect Karen Kungortsev, 22, has been on a hunger strike for almost a week at the Vanadzor Penitentiary. This was reported to Epress.am by Kungortsev's mother, Anahit Harutyunyan, who said she received news that her son's health condition is not good.

Kungortsev is protesting for what he claims is an unlawful detention. He claims that he has nothing to do with the murder of 15-year-old David Hovakimyan.

On April 7, the Lori District Court of First Instance once again extended Kungortsev's detention term, which, according to his attorney, was without grounds.

Kungortsev says he is innocent, while human rights defenders and his attorney point to violations during the preliminary investigation.

While behind bars, the accused has resorted to self harm, as well as beginning a hunger strike. His mother said that her son was beaten by police while under police custody and forced to confess to the crime.
