New Bill Aims to Curb Sex-Selective Abortion in Armenia: Tert.am

The RA Ministry of Healthcare is considering a legislative measure that would prohibit informing parents the sex of the child until the 30th week of pregnancy, said chair of the parliamentary Standing Committee on Healthcare, Maternity and Childhood Ara Babloyan at a meeting on "The Prevalence and Causes of Sex-Selective Abortion in Armenia" in Armenia's National Assembly today, reports Tert.am

According to Babloyan, the bill has not yet been circulated, as they intend to discuss the issue with Members of Parliament first then send it to the government. 

UNFPA Armenia Country Office Assistant Representative Garik Hayrapetyan said sex-selective birth is quite worrying in Armenia not only because people's desire to have a boy is illogical, but also because it could have negative consequences
