Why Defense Ministry Hides Amount of Compensation to Families of Deceased Soldiers: Hraparak

The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia (RA) keeps a secret how much it has allocated in the current year in connection with the deaths of soldiers and military officers, reports local daily Hraparak.

The newspaper notes that by declassifying this information, the number of victims in the army for the past 6 months will be known.

The ministry provides more than 2 million AMD (about $4,900 USD) to every family of a deceased soldier. According to RA Ministry of Defense spokesperson Artsrun Hovhannisyan, there is no significant difference in the amount allocated to families of officers and those of rank-and-file soldiers. The military unit transfers an additional 200,000 to 1 million AMD ($490–$2,450) — not officially but as moral compensation.

"The amount of the money is due to the circumstances and causes of death; for example, in cases of suicide or incidents qualified as suicide no money is transferred," reports the paper.
