Seven Die in Major Car Accident in Shirak Marz

Yesterday evening, at approximately 7:15 pm, seven people died in a major car accident which took place on the Horom-Gusangyugh villages bus line in Shirak marz (province).

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, on the 108 km sector of the Yerevan-Gyumri highway, a GAZelle minibus and a Kamaz truck collided with each other. Subsequently, the GAZelle caught on fire, while the Kamaz truck was thrown off the road into a nearby field. The rescuers were able to extinguish the fire within 20-25 minutes.

The GAZelle minibus was burnt in its entirety, and until firefighters reached the scene, those at the scene were able to rescue seven passengers out of the minibus and transfer them to the Gyumri Medical Center. The other seven passengers passed away, their bodies were unrecognizable and originally it was not possible to identify their bodies. The first to be identified was driver Razmik Mkrtchyan, and as of this morning, so were passengers Marine Nazaryan (55-years old), Aramayis Shirazuni (60-years old), Vanik Sargsyan (20-years old), Davit Harutyunyan (20-years old), Habet Sedrakyan (52-years old) and Gayane Sedrakyan (50-years old), the latter two were married.

Among the injured, 13-year old Edmon Simonyan who had multiple wounds, was transferred to Yerevan. The other injured are Samvel Hakobyan (17-year old), Hasmik Hovhannisyan (37-year old), Karen Baghdasaryan (39-year old),  Zaruhi Hovhannisyan (37-year old), and Albert Shahnazaryan (22-year old). Their situation is stable.

The 70-year old Kamaz driver M. Vardanyan has been arrested. In connection with the incident, a criminal case has been launched based on the Criminal Code’s Article 242.3 (breach of traffic rules and operation of means of transportation, which by negligence caused the death of 2 or more persons).
