Police Intervene, Detain Dozens as Opponents Protest Constitutional Amendments in Yerevan

Dozens of members of the No Front fighting against the adoption of the president-initiated constitutional amendments, among them – Albert Margaryan, Sergey Grigoryan, Serob Gasparyan, Areg Gevorgyan, Sargis Gevorgyan, and lawyer Tigran Yegoryan – were detained on Monday during the ongoing protest action in front of the Armenia’s National Assembly building.

According to an Epress.am reporter on scene, police intervened and triggered clashes when the protesters attempted to attach a banner reading “NO!” to the gates of the parliament. At the moment, law enforcement officers continue the detention of demonstrators.

Meanwhile, lawyers and Armenian Ombudsman staff members are not allowed to visit the detainees at the Arabkir police division, lawyer Arusyak Julyakyan said in a phone conversation with Epress.am. The lawyers, she added, have been kept waiting in the reception area for more than an hour.

Note, the final text of the draft Constitution has been submitted on October 5 to the parliament for a vote by the president-adjunct Specialized Commission on Constitutional Reforms. The constitutional amendments will be put to a referendum later in the year.
