Citizen Refuses to Participate in ‘Illegitimate’ Referendum, Demands Her Name Be Removed From Electoral List

“As a citizen of the Republic of Armenia, I refuse to take part on December 6 in the referendum on Constitutional amendments. I find the holding of the referendum, as well as the entire process of constitutional changes illegitimate,” citizen Arpine Galfayan wrote in an open letter addressed to, as stated by the author, “incumbent head” of  the RA Central Electoral Commission Tigran Mukuchyan, “incumbent chief” of the RA Police Vladimir Gasparyan, “incumbent head” of Yerevan's Central Passport and Visa Department Anahit Virabyan. On November 26, Galfayan, along with three other citizens, issued a statement [AM] explaining the reasons for their decision.

In her open letter Galfayan noted that she is announcing her decision not to participate in the referendum in advance so that it be “viewed as an act of dissent and rebellion against the implemented lawlessness.”

“This is a public statement on my deliberate decision not to take part in the elections; I refuse to be part  of this process of weakening the state and do not feel responsible for any consequences arising from these elections.

“At the same time, consider this an official letter of appeal with which I demand that my name be removed from Armenia's electoral list and not be included in the voters' register for the December 6 referendum,” Galfayan wrote.
