Armenian Security Forces Arrest Reserve Major for Spying for Azerbaijan

Armenia’s National Security Service (NSS) has arrested a reserve Armenian major suspected of spying for Azerbaijan. According to the security authorities' statement released Wednesday, December 9, 38-year-old Armavir province native Garik Marutyan was arrested on December 4.

The reserve major, officials said, having held chief intelligence posts at various military units of Armenia's Defense Ministry for years, established contact via social media with Azerbaijani special services deployed in Turkey and sold them Armenian military information containing “state secrets.”

The statement added that Marutyan has been charged with high treason. As envisaged by Article 299 of Armenia’s Criminal Code, the suspect can be sentenced to up to 15 years' imprisonment if found guilty.
