Three Armenian Opposition Parties Join Forces Ahead of Parliamentary Elections

Three Armenian opposition parties – Bright Armenia, Republic, and Civil Contract – announced on Monday that they have joined forces to be represented as a single alliance in the parliamentary elections scheduled for April, 2017. During a Monday news conference, representatives of the parties signed a joint memorandum, according to which, the opposition forces will also negotiate on possibly transforming into a single party.

The text of the memorandum, signed by Bright Armenia council chairman Edmon Marukyan, Republic council chairman Aram Sargsyan, and Civil Contract council chairman Sasun Mikayelyan, was later published on Civil Contract’s Facebook page. It stated that decisions on joint activities, including on attracting new forces to the alliance, will be made by consensus.

“The alliance will strive for the formation of the European model of democratic, rule-of-law, and social state in Armenia, with the best national characteristics and interests,” the memorandum said.
