Shirak University Students Boycott Classes to Support Hunger-Striking Professor

Several dozen students of the Shirak State University are boycotting classes to support the hunger strike of their history and philosophy professor Hovhannes Khorikyan. Recall, the professor went on a hunger strike on Monday “to invite the attention of the public to rector Sahak Minasyan’s atrocious conduct.”

The boycotting students have written an open letter to rector Minasyan and Education and Science Minister Levon Mkrtchyan, demanding  that they address the concerns raised by Khorikyan and fulfill his demands. In addition, the students call on the rector to refrain from making discrediting statements about Khorikyan and “to appreciate his high personal and professional qualities.”

The students have also put forward a set of their own demands to the rector, including the provision of systematic tuition discounts to academically successful students and a timely payment of overdue academic benefits.
