New War Could ‘Explode’ the Region: Opinion on Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict

Baku and Yerevan, making bellicose statements, in general, are not that far from reality, reports Nezavisimaya Gazeta (“Independent Paper”), citing military experts.

Azerbaijan, through actively investing oil money in the military sector, has been able to gain a certain advantage in technical terms, and has managed to increase the size of its army.

However, military experts note that this advantage could be offset during war by difficult mountainous terrain in Nagorno-Karabakh and the fact that the defense always has the advantage over the offense.

“Also very important is the level of moral readiness, the army spirit. Here, I wouldn’t say that Azerbaijan has an advantage, quite the contrary. Not least because the Armenians will defend their homes and hearths not at the level of military-patriotic talks but rather quite subjectively. If it comes to armed conflict, a new war can explode the entire region,” said an anonymous source.

In the case of renewed fighting in Karabakh, writes Nezavisimaya Gazeta, neighboring countries can be drawn into the conflict: Turkey as Azerbaijan’s strategic partner and Russia as Armenia’s strategic partner.

Armenia and Azerbaijan would begin to pressure Georgia, which is considered the strategic partner of both countries.

It is unlikely that Yerevan and Baku cannot imagine this hell, writes the paper, and it is hoped that their military threats are only for “internal use,” that is, addressed primarily to their own audiences.
