{"id":127010,"date":"2011-09-15T11:00:49","date_gmt":"2011-09-15T06:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=127010"},"modified":"2011-09-15T11:00:49","modified_gmt":"2011-09-15T06:00:49","slug":"australians-now-have-choice-of-third-gender-on-passports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2011\/09\/15\/australians-now-have-choice-of-third-gender-on-passports.html","title":{"rendered":"Australians Now Have Choice of Third Gender on Passports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People will be able to choose what gender they want to be listed as on new Australian passports, even if they have not undergone a sex change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the past, Australians could only change their gender on their passports if they had had a sex change operation or were travelling to get one, reports the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2011-09-15\/passport-gender-choice-made-easier\/2899928\/?site=melbourne\">Australian Broadcasting Corporation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has introduced new guidelines so that instead of surgery, all that is needed is a letter of support from a medical practitioner.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The changes mean Australians can identify their sex of choice and select Male, Female or X.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Labor Senator Louise Pratt says international travel can be downright dangerous for people whose appearance does not match the gender listed on their passport.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There have been very many cases of people being detained at airports by immigration in foreign countries simply because their passports don&#8217;t reflect what they look like,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s very distressing, highly inconvenient and frankly sometimes dangerous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Senator Pratt is the first member of Federal Parliament to have a transgendered partner, who was born female but has transitioned to male.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is really pleasing for people like him.
