{"id":133933,"date":"2011-10-09T10:04:47","date_gmt":"2011-10-09T05:04:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=133933"},"modified":"2011-10-09T10:05:53","modified_gmt":"2011-10-09T05:05:53","slug":"opposition-leader-ends-nonstop-rallies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2011\/10\/09\/opposition-leader-ends-nonstop-rallies.html","title":{"rendered":"Opposition Leader Ends Nonstop Rallies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Armenian National Congress (HAK) declared the nonstop protests, which the opposition bloc and its supporters had been staging for 8 days in Yerevan&#8217;s Liberty Square, over on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is being proposed to immediately cancel this event. It is suggested to stop at this time [but] to hold a sit-in and rally for an unlimited period at the required moment,&#8221; said HAK leader and former president Levon Ter-Petrossian, who began his speech by presenting a statement adopted by the bloc called &#8220;a resolution on the round-the-clock sit-in\/rally.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The announcement provoked cries of discontent from sections of the crowd that demanded that the round-the-clock sit-in continue until Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan&#8217;s administration agrees to call early presidential and parliamentary elections, <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.azatutyun.am\/content\/article\/24353591.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">RFE\/RL&#8217;s Armenian service reports<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ral.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133877 aligncenter\" title=\"ral\" src=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ral.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ral.jpg 450w, https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ral-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The opposition leader asserted that the nonstop rallies unified the political parties in the bloc. &#8220;The more active we are, the more the international community will make decisions in our favor. The world does not like nations who don&#8217;t struggle,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/rally3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133883 aligncenter\" title=\"rally\" src=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/rally3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/rally3.jpg 450w, https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/rally3-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The HAK set up a tent camp in Liberty Square on Sept. 30 in hopes of stepping up pressure on the Armenian authorities. At the same time, it offered to resume talks with Sargsyan\u2019s ruling coalition without preconditions.<\/p>\n<p>Ter-Petrossian\u2019s bloc previously made their resumption conditional on the release of an opposition activist controversially arrested in August.<\/p>\n<p>Coalition representatives have made clear that they will not negotiate with the HAK until the \u201cillegal\u201d protests are over. In another sign of its self-confidence, the Sargsyan administration has still not responded to another, more far-reaching offer made by Ter-Petrossian.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Sept. 23, Armenia\u2019s first president said the HAK is ready to reconsider its demands for fresh elections in case of a \u201creasonable compromise\u201d with the government.<\/p>\n<p>The HAK statement read out by Ter-Petrossian sought to put a brave face on the bloc\u2019s failure so far to clinch concessions from Sargsyan.
