{"id":137586,"date":"2011-10-28T11:18:10","date_gmt":"2011-10-28T06:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=137586"},"modified":"2011-10-28T11:22:53","modified_gmt":"2011-10-28T06:22:53","slug":"turkey-plans-to-take-legal-action-against-armenian-nuclear-plant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2011\/10\/28\/turkey-plans-to-take-legal-action-against-armenian-nuclear-plant.html","title":{"rendered":"Turkey Plans to Take Legal Action Against Armenian Nuclear Plant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Turkey\u2019s Energy Minister Taner Y\u0131ld\u0131z has said he ordered the country\u2019s nuclear authority to measure radioactivity in the east after the deadly earthquake in Van province for fear of leaks from a nuclear plant in Armenia, reports the <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hurriyetdailynews.com\/n.php?n=turkey-plans-to-take-action-against-armenian-plant-2011-10-27\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">H\u00fcrriyet Daily News<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority to immediately conduct tests,\u201d Y\u0131ld\u0131z told a group of journalists in Ankara while speaking at a reception to mark the 50th anniversary of the H\u00fcrriyet Daily News.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey is preparing to take legal action against all superannuated nuclear power plants across the world, including Metsamor in Armenia, the minister said.<\/p>\n<p>The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will receive from Turkey complaints about dozens of nuclear plants across the world that have already exceed an age of 40, Y\u0131ld\u0131z said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome countries are announcing that they are putting an end to nuclear power and closing superannuated plants, but they are continuing to build new ones,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is not right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the minister declined to specify any country by name.<\/p>\n<p>Recall, immediately following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Turkey, Armenia&#8217;s Ministry of Emergency Situations said that the quake <strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/en\/2011\/10\/24\/turkey-earthquake-did-not-affect-armenia-nuclear-power-plant-ministry.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">did not affect<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong> the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP, or MNPP for Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant).<\/p>\n<p>Turkey\u2019s to-be-built nuclear plant near the town of Akkuyu in the southern province of Akkuyu would be \u201cthe strongest building in the country,\u201d Y\u0131ld\u0131z said. As risk grows, security measures grow too, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will invest some $20 billion there. It will become an important part of the overall energy system and we will still bear risks. Sorry, but neither the state nor the private sector would take such a risk. One should be crazy, otherwise. We will not let it happen.
