{"id":137781,"date":"2011-10-28T18:16:53","date_gmt":"2011-10-28T13:16:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=137781"},"modified":"2011-10-28T18:16:53","modified_gmt":"2011-10-28T13:16:53","slug":"poland-reopens-investigation-into-auschwitz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2011\/10\/28\/poland-reopens-investigation-into-auschwitz.html","title":{"rendered":"Poland Reopens Investigation into Auschwitz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Polish authorities have reopened an investigation into World War II crimes committed at Auschwitz and its satellite camps that was closed in the 1980s because of the country\u2019s isolation behind the Iron Curtain.<\/p>\n<p>One aim of the new probe is to track down any living Nazi perpetrators, according to an <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ipn.gov.pl\/portal\/en\/2\/540\/The_Institute_of_National_Remembrance_launches_investigation_into_the_AuschwitzB.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">announcement<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span> Thursday by the Institute of National Remembrance, a state body that investigates Nazi and communist-era crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Nazi Germany opened Auschwitz in 1940, months after it invaded and occupied Poland. Over the next five years of war, German and Austrian Nazis murdered up to 1.5 million people there at the expanded Auschwitz-Birkenau camp complex, most of them Jews from across Europe, but also Poles, Roma, gays and others.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation was opened by a branch of the remembrance institute in Krakow, which is located near Auschwitz. Germany also operated other death camps across Poland \u2014 like Chelmno, Treblinka and Belzec \u2014 and it was not immediately clear if new investigations into them are also planned, <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a href=\"Poland%20originally%20launched%20investigations%20into%20crimes%20at%20Auschwitz%20in%20the%201960s%20and%201970s,%20but%20closed%20them%20in%20the%201980s%20without%20any%20indictments%20being%20made.%20Poland%20had%20difficulty%20questioning%20witnesses%20and%20perpetrators%20living%20abroad%20because%20it%20was%20cut%20off%20behind%20the%20Iron%20Curtain.%0A%0AThe%20Institute%20for%20National%20Remembrance%20said%20it%20has%20already%20begun%20questioning%20witnesses%20as%20part%20of%20the%20revived%20investigation.%20It%20said%20the%20probe%20is%20aimed%20in%20part%20at%20%E2%80%9Cfinding%20and,%20if%20needed,%20detaining%20the%20perpetrators.%E2%80%9D%0A%0AThe%20last%20time%20Poland%20prosecuted%20anyone%20for%20Nazi%20crimes%20was%20in%202001,%20when%20a%20Pole,%20Henryk%20Mania,%20was%20sentenced%20to%20eight%20years%20in%20prison%20for%20taking%20parts%20in%20acts%20of%20genocide%20at%20the%20death%20camp%20of%20Chelmno.\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Washington Post<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span> reports, citing AP.<\/p>\n<p>Poland originally launched investigations into crimes at Auschwitz in the 1960s and 1970s, but closed them in the 1980s without any indictments being made. Poland had difficulty questioning witnesses and perpetrators living abroad because it was cut off behind the Iron Curtain.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute for National Remembrance said it has already begun questioning witnesses as part of the revived investigation.
