{"id":142695,"date":"2011-11-18T15:05:59","date_gmt":"2011-11-18T11:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=142695"},"modified":"2011-11-18T15:07:15","modified_gmt":"2011-11-18T11:07:15","slug":"historical-heroes-armenian-brothers-hotel-chain-a-legacy-in-malaysia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2011\/11\/18\/historical-heroes-armenian-brothers-hotel-chain-a-legacy-in-malaysia.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Historical Heroes&#8217;: Armenian Brothers&#8217; Hotel Chain a Legacy in Malaysia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Kardashian sisters may be the most famous Armenian family globally but in South East Asia, the Sarkies brothers are historical heroes especially among hoteliers, write Christina Chin and Jeremy Tan in the Malyasian news source <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/thestar.com.my\/metro\/story.asp?file=\/2011\/11\/18\/north\/9927221&amp;sec=north\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Star<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The Sarkies brothers, Martin, Tigran, Aviet and Arshak (pictured below), were best known for founding and managing a chain of luxury hotels throughout South East Asia including E&amp;O Hotel, and Crag Hotel on Penang Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Penang Heritage Trust (PHT) secretary Clement Liang said the Armenian community in Penang had made great contributions to the region especially in Singapore and Penang (Malaysia).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Arshak.Sarkies.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-142703 aligncenter\" title=\"Arshak.Sarkies\" src=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Arshak.Sarkies.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Arshak.Sarkies.jpg 400w, https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Arshak.Sarkies-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Armenian community were a minority but their contributions were significant especially in establishing and running a chain of prestigious hotels in Penang.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn George Town, you have Armenian Street and Aratoon Road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe latter was named after Arathoon Anthony who brought his family to Penang in 1819. He was a trader and planter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Armenian community in Penang used to worship at St Gregory\u2019s Church which was located between Penang Street and King Street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, the Armenian community no longer live here.
