{"id":145764,"date":"2011-12-01T13:22:18","date_gmt":"2011-12-01T09:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=145764"},"modified":"2011-12-01T14:16:51","modified_gmt":"2011-12-01T10:16:51","slug":"death-of-azerbaijani-journalist-a-blow-to-press-freedom-freedom-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2011\/12\/01\/death-of-azerbaijani-journalist-a-blow-to-press-freedom-freedom-house.html","title":{"rendered":"Death of Azerbaijani Journalist a Blow to Press Freedom: Freedom House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The fatal stabbing of Azerbaijani journalist Rafig Taghi (Rafiq Ta\u011f\u0131, pictured below) is a blow to press freedom and the latest in a series of troubling events that underscore the worsening human rights situation in Azerbaijan, reads a Nov. 30 <strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/template.cfm?page=581&amp;alert=159\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">statement<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong> issued by human rights watchdog Freedom House.<\/p>\n<p>On Nov. 19, Taghi, 61, was stabbed multiple times near his home in Baku by an unknown man. <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rferl.org\/content\/azerbaijani_journalist_targeted_by_fatwa_dies_of_stab_attack_injuries\/24399744.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While in the hospital<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, Taghi said the attack was likely in retaliation for a <strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.azadliq.org\/content\/article\/24387134.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">piece<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong> he wrote for Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty (RFE\/RL) on globalization that was critical of the Iranian government, and suspected his attacker was a supporter of the regime. Police have launched a criminal investigation into his death but have not yet arrested the assailant. In a clear case of incitement to violence, Iranian Ayatollah Sheikh Mahammad Lankari\u2019s praised Taghi\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Rafiq-Tagi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-145754 aligncenter\" title=\"Rafiq Tagi\" src=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Rafiq-Tagi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Rafiq-Tagi.jpg 400w, https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Rafiq-Tagi-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Azerbaijan is not an electoral democracy, and the freedom of expression situation remains dire. Although the constitution guarantees freedom of speech and press, in practice authorities severely limit both. Libel is a criminal offense, which the government frequently uses for political reasons. Authorities continue to imprison journalists and bloggers who express dissenting opinions. In Jun. 2011, an American journalist and British activist were attacked.
