{"id":150144,"date":"2011-12-21T15:29:04","date_gmt":"2011-12-21T11:29:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=150144"},"modified":"2011-12-21T15:29:04","modified_gmt":"2011-12-21T11:29:04","slug":"us-aid-to-armenia-remains-unchanged-for-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2011\/12\/21\/us-aid-to-armenia-remains-unchanged-for-2012.html","title":{"rendered":"US Aid to Armenia Remains Unchanged for 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate and House finalized the Fiscal Year\u00a02012 US foreign assistance package this past weekend,\u00a0approving $40 million in US assistance to Armenia, maintaining\u00a0current funding levels for Nagorno Karabakh, and calling for\u00a0military assistance parity for Armenia and Azerbaijan, reported the\u00a0Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).<\/p>\n<p>The funding, though unchanged from the 2011 level, falls short of at least $60 million demanded by about 30 pro-Armenian members of the House last May. Nevertheless, the leading Armenian lobby groups in the United States seem largely satisfied with it, <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.azatutyun.am\/content\/article\/24428347.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>RFE\/RL&#8217;s Armenian service<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span> (Azatutyun) reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout the appropriations process, the Assembly worked with the House and Senate, and in particular our friends on the House and Senate Appropriations Committees to make sure that funding for Armenia was maintained,\u201d Armenian Assembly of America Executive Director Bryan Ardouny.<\/p>\n<p>The US Congress has allocated a total of more than $1.7 billion to Armenia since 1992. The money has been spent on humanitarian aid, infrastructure upgrades, equipment supplies, counseling and other projects administered by the US Agency for International Development.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of US aid to the Caucasus, Congress approved US President Barack Obama&#8217;s proposed economic assistance levels, including $40 million\u00a0for Armenia, $16.6 million for Azerbaijan, and $66 million for\u00a0Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>In a report accompanying the foreign aid bill, Senate and House conferees made specific mention that there should be parity in both Foreign Military Finance (FMF) and International Military Education and Training (IMET) levels to Armenia and Azerbaijan.
