{"id":150550,"date":"2011-12-22T17:09:42","date_gmt":"2011-12-22T13:09:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=150550"},"modified":"2011-12-22T23:46:33","modified_gmt":"2011-12-22T19:46:33","slug":"french-mps-pass-bill-criminalizing-denial-of-armenian-genocide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2011\/12\/22\/french-mps-pass-bill-criminalizing-denial-of-armenian-genocide.html","title":{"rendered":"French MPs Pass Bill Criminalizing Denial of Armenian Genocide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MPs in France today approved the bill making denial of the Armenian Genocide illegal.<\/p>\n<p>The vote, by show of hands, saw the bill proposed by Union for Popular Movement (UMP) MP Val\u00e9rie Boyer backed by a large majority of the 50 or so MPs present in the National Assembly, AFP news agency reports.<\/p>\n<p>About two dozen MPs spoke in the session that began early this morning, many of them recalling not only separate episodes of the Armenian Genocide but also present-day Turkish state policy \u2014 the destruction of monuments, Ankara&#8217;s threats against France and the continuing blockade.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the deputies stated they are against neither the Turkish people nor the country&#8217;s current authorities, and they do not blame them for events of the past. They only want that the state confronts its history.<\/p>\n<p>The bill is expected to go before the Senate early next year.
