{"id":152242,"date":"2012-01-09T14:36:27","date_gmt":"2012-01-09T10:36:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=152242"},"modified":"2012-01-09T14:36:27","modified_gmt":"2012-01-09T10:36:27","slug":"vatican-used-wikipedia-to-compile-cardinals-biographies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2012\/01\/09\/vatican-used-wikipedia-to-compile-cardinals-biographies.html","title":{"rendered":"Vatican Used Wikipedia to Compile Cardinals&#8217; Biographies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eyebrows were raised when the Vatican resorted to Wikipedia when it released potted biographies of 22 new cardinals who were appointed on Jan. 6, <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2012\/jan\/08\/vatican-wikipedia-cardinals-biographies\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span> reports.<\/p>\n<p>The biographies, sent to journalists, were cut and pasted from Wikipedia&#8217;s Italian language site without attribution, but questions were asked when many of the archbishops in line for promotion were described as Catholic \u2013 a statement recalling the frequently asked question: &#8220;Is the Pope a Catholic?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a tone that does not exactly match the Vatican&#8217;s style, Willem Jacobus Eijk, the archbishop of Utrecht, is described as having a &#8220;strong tendency to conservatism, specially regarding abortion and homosexuality, which has made him one of the most talked about religious men in the country&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi pointed out that the bios were carefully labelled as &#8220;unofficial&#8221; and said the decision to use Wikipedia was a temporary measure driven by haste. &#8220;Since then we have been putting up official bios on our site,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, the use of Wikipedia seems in line with Benedict&#8217;s approval of the internet.
