{"id":163446,"date":"2012-02-22T11:05:27","date_gmt":"2012-02-22T07:05:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=163446"},"modified":"2012-02-22T11:07:19","modified_gmt":"2012-02-22T07:07:19","slug":"osceodihr-to-send-fewer-observers-to-armenia-than-past-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2012\/02\/22\/osceodihr-to-send-fewer-observers-to-armenia-than-past-elections.html","title":{"rendered":"OSCE\/ODIHR to Send Fewer Observers to Armenia than Past Elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contrary to the expectations of Armenia&#8217;s opposition, the OSCE ODIHR (Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights) office is preparing to send 250 short-term and 24 long-term election observers \u2014\u00a0fewer than those sent in the 2007 parliamentary and the 2008 presidential elections, reports local daily Haykakan Jamanak (&#8220;Armenian Times&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the opposition bloc the Armenian National Congress <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/en\/2012\/01\/19\/osce-wont-send-2000-election-observers-as-requested-by-armenian-national-congress.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">had asked<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span> the OSCE for 2,000 observers.<\/p>\n<p>The paper recalls that for the May 12, 2007 parliamentary elections, OSCE\/ODIHR had sent 411 short-term observers who monitored only on Election Day. Furthermore, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe also had a team of 29 long-term observers and 15 experts.<\/p>\n<p>For the Feb. 19, 2008 president election, OSCE\/ODIHR had sent 28 long-term and 333 short-term observers, along with 16 experts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It would seem that on the backdrop of the 2008 presidential election and the events that followed, the OSCE would increase the number of its observers in the upcoming elections.
