{"id":167393,"date":"2012-03-08T14:15:53","date_gmt":"2012-03-08T10:15:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=167393"},"modified":"2012-03-08T14:16:41","modified_gmt":"2012-03-08T10:16:41","slug":"estonia-teachers-strike-biggest-since-wwii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2012\/03\/08\/estonia-teachers-strike-biggest-since-wwii.html","title":{"rendered":"Estonia Teachers Strike Biggest Since WWII"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Teachers in Estonia have staged what commentators are calling the biggest strike in the country since World War Two, <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2012\/03\/07\/estonian-teachers-strike-demanding-pay-hikes\/\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Euronews<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span> reports.<\/p>\n<p>They are calling for a 20 percent pay rise, complaining that following the cancellation of their 2009 rise, they are still being paid at 2008 rates.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers\u2019 salaries in Estonia are between 600 and 800 euros a month against average salaries of 865 euros a month.<\/p>\n<p>Estonia, which adopted the euro at the start of 2011, was hit by a deep recession in 2009 and the government cut spending.<\/p>\n<p>Last year it notched up one of the fastest growth rates in the European Union and teachers now want some of the benefit of that growth.<\/p>\n<p>About 4,000 teachers held a protest in the centre of capital city Tallinn, while throughout the country, about 16,000 teachers were on strike.<\/p>\n<p>The two day action is being supported by other unions.<\/p>\n<p><em>Photo: Estonian teachers demonstrating in Tallinn last October (from\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersolidarity.com\/blog\/estonian-teachers-to-strike-in-march\/\">Teacher\u00a0Solidarity<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teachers in Estonia have staged what commentators are calling the biggest strike in the country since World War Two.
